GLYCOEASE

A smart insulin toolbox that helps older adults keep their own treatment routine, and keep the dignity of doing it themselves.

9 × 7 × 4.5 in2 pens · 8 refills · 30 needles

A treatment routine is a job nobody applied for.

Insulin is not one task. It is a schedule, a dosage, a cold chain, a needle count and a memory test, repeated three times a day, forever. Older adults with diabetes carry it with less margin for error, and when it slips, a family member quietly picks it up.

The patient

Leans on family for the parts they no longer trust themselves with, and loses a little decision-making each time.

The caregiver

Absorbs the schedule into their own day: fewer outings, less rest, and a standing worry that never fully closes.

The opening

If the box itself remembers, the person keeps the task, and the caregiver gets to be family again.

User testing

Two people, forty years of insulin, one unfamiliar box.

After the test use, the participants were generally satisfied with the box's components and thought the overall design was intuitive. Although this was their first time using it, they were able to understand most functions quickly.

Takeaway
Portability

The overall size is easy to handle and fits easily into a regular size bag.

Ease of use

The intuitive layout made it easy to grasp how to operate it.

Nondescript appearance

The simple exterior doesn't seem abrupt in any home environment, and doesn't raise unwanted attention.

Feedback
Lack of step-by-step indication: more guidance on each step will benefit users with cognitive impairment.
Indication light per component
Lacking assistance for visual impairment: eyesight declines, and the screen alone is not enough.
Voice assistance alongside the display
Needle reuse: participants were reluctant to change needles, usually discarding one only after two or three injections to save money.
Track needle age and reward changing it

Two dangerous actions the box helps prevent.

01

Reusing needles

Participants admitted reusing needles to save money, which is dangerous past a handful of injections. The tray counts what leaves it, so the box can notice, name the number of days, and thank you when the habit changes.

needle taken? a nudge, not a scold “2 days on one needle” well done
02

Injecting twice

Hypoglycemia rarely announces itself. When a dose is already logged and the lid opens again, the box holds the safety lock closed, states the next scheduled time, and asks for a deliberate second confirmation before it lets go.

Vision

Give the routine back to the person living it.

GLYCOEASE takes the remembering, the counting and the paperwork off the table so that what is left (the decision, the injection, the day) still belongs to the older adult. Precision for the condition, room for the life around it.

Working with the professionals

The product’s future direction is to collaborate directly with clinics and hospitals for a seamless transfer: the doctor enters the data during the appointment, double-checks it, uploads it, and the toolbox downloads the latest prescription the next time it is online.
